Amanda's Journal
Hey guys! How was your weekend? I hope it was fabulous! A big thanks and congratulations to all of the participants in the speech contest yesterday! You guys was excellent! Last Saturday, I rode my bicycle to Hikari and went to Uniqlo.  My grandfather and my brother both have birthdays in January, so I decided to buy my brother a birthday present.  My brother, as many of you know, is a glass-blower, so his shop is outside.  In the winter, he is always complaining about how cold it is, but he can't wear a coat or anything at work because he is working with fire and baggy clothing that could easily catch fire is dangerous.  So, I thought, maybe he would like a heat-tech shirt from Uniqlo.  Even if he can't use it this year, I thought maybe he could use it next year.  Actually, I already sent him a birthday present.  The first birthday present was also a shirt, but a dress shirt.  Becuase my brother is an independent glass maker, he has to try to sell his glass to store owners individually, so I thought a nice dress shirt might be good for that.  But, I bought the wrong size! My brother is really tall, but really thin, so it's always difficult to buy the correct size for him! My mom said that the shirt was too tight in the shoulders, but my brother kept trying it on anyway, "just to make sure." I thought that was so cute! So, I bought him a new present.  If this shirt isn't the right size either, I give up! Hopefully it's OK though! Looking forward to seeing you guys for another great week!

Amanda's Journal
Hey guys! How was your weekend? I hope it was fabulous! So, recently, I have had a couple of very interesting experiences with Japanese language.  When most people speak to me in Japanese, they usually use very polite Japanese with me.  Or, at least they try to.  Some people can't perfectly separate standard Japanese and Yamaguchi's dialect, and of course, some people make mistakes when using passive verbs, etc., but I would say that without a doubt most people use formal, polite Japanese when speaking to me.  Also, 99.9% of people call me, "Amanda-san," or, "Shaw-san."  But, the other day, I was talking to my friend who is teaching me how to ride a motorcycle.  We were going to go practice, and right before hanging up, my friend said, ¤ªÁ°¡¢¥¸¥ó¥Ñ¥óÍú¤¤¤Ã¤Á¤ç¤¤ä¡ª´¨¤¤¤Ã¤±¡ªAt first, I was really surprised! Nobody had ever spoken to me like that before.  My first impulse was, "I'm going to punch him in the face." But, then I thought, "If I punch him in the face, he might get mad and stop teaching me how to ride, so I better watch my temper." However, I thought about what my friend had said later that evening.  Naturally, the fact that my friend had the guts to talk to me like that was very interesting.  At first I was simply intrigued, but the more I thought about it, the more I thought that my reaction was the strangest thing of all.  I thought, there's nothing wrong with people using casual Japanese when they talk to me.  People have different ways of speaking, and there's nothing wrong with that.  My English is also very casual.  Plus, my friend helps me a lot, so I don't think the reason he spoke to me like that is b/c he doesn't like me or doesn't respect me.  So, I feel like I should tell you guys too: if you go abroad or if you become friends w/ people from different cultures, they may not speak to you in polite English.  However, there are many different reasons for that, so think about each case indivdually.  Looking forward to seeing you guys for another great week!

Hey guys! How was your weekend? I hope it was fabulous! So, I have some exciting news: my motorcycle arrived! Yeah!!! When it was lifted off the truck, I was so happy!! I really thought I might cry! I wondered to myself, "Is this how it feels when you have a child?" Maybe.  So, for the past week I have been practicing stopping¡¢starting, and smoothly changing gears.  Naturally, I'm pretty bad at riding and am nowhere near being able to ride on the street w/ other cars, but I don't care.  Riding a motorcylce is like English; the more you practice, the better you'll get! Nobody is perfect in the beginning.  Also, I have already fallen off my motorcycle 4 times; ouch! My motorcycle, even though it's smaller than other bikes, is heavy, and it hurts when I fall! I'm afraid of riding my morotcycle on the street and very afraid that I could be in an accident if I make even one mistake.  But, fear won't stop me! I will summon courage from somewhere! One of my friends is helping me learn how to ride, and my goal is to be able to ride in time to go see cherry blossoms! I encourage you all to never let fear be the reason you don't do something you really want to try! Looking forward to seeing you all for another great week!
