Last Minute Packing

Just like many of you I am preparing for my Golden Week vacation. I don't know why but there always seems like there's so much to do before I take a trip. I have to make sure the bills are paid, go to the bank , charge batteries for all the devices that one carries around these days , do laundry, take out garbage... the list seems endless.

Of course the most important part of preparing for a trip is packing . It seems like a simple task, but for me it never is! Deciding what I should take and what I should leave behind has always been difficult for me. You would think that after all these years of globetrotting I would have packing down to a science. I mean, I took my first international flight at 3 weeks old and have never stopped! I should be a pro by now.

Still, every time I travel I have the same dilemma. What goes and what stays? Will my bag be too heavy? Will I leave out something that I will need? Will I bring too many things? What will the weather be like? Will I need to bring dress clothes just in case I decide to go for a night on the town? All these questions lead to one result... LAST MINUTE PACKING.

For the past week (or more) I have been taking things out for my trip. Laying them neatly in a pile to be reviewed one last time before they go into my travel bag. Sooner or later I will make the final edit and 'finish' packing. However, there are two things that I am sure of. Firstly, my packing won't be done until the very last moment . And secondly, I will still be left wondering "is it too much or not enough?!"

But it's gonna be  ! One thing that I have learned from experience is that at the end of the day it won't matter what is in my bags.  I always have a great time when traveling.

I hope that you all have a wonderful Golden Week weather you are traveling, working or enjoying the time at home. Please be safe and have fun! See you soon.

Bucket Lists
 Hello everyone!

Ziggy here.  I hope everyone has been enjoying the beautiful weather the start of spring has brought us.  I wish the weather was like this all summer in Japan...I really don't like the humidity!

In English we have an expression 'kick the bucket', which is what we say when someone has passed away.  Because of this people often talk about 'Bucket Lists', or things they want to do in their lifetime.  There's even a Hollywood movie entitled 'The Bucket List' with Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson that I recommend you check out if you have the chance.

The reason I bring this up, is because I have made something like a bucket list in regards to Japan.  These are things I want to do in Japan while I'm here, such as: stay in a ryokan and a capsule hotel, go to kabuki, wear a kimono, or watch a Carps game.  I've managed to check a few off as well, for example karaoke (many times!), purikura (many times!), pachinko, and in March I was able to watch the Grand Sumo tournament in Osaka.

This past weekend, I checked another one off.  I was invited by a friend of mine in Hofu city to do a tour of Hofu by bike with the English International Group there.  I have already been on a tour around Hofu last November with this group and went to places such as Hofu Tenmangu, went mikan picking, and up Mount Ohira.  The weather wasn't very nice this weekend and I nearly didn't go but decided in the end I should, as I haven't seen a lot of friends in the last few months and maybe I would see something new.  I'm glad I did now as I met a few new friends and also got to see a Japanese tea ceremony!  It was really interesting to learn the proper way to drink the tea, and the wisteria shaped sweet served to us was so beautiful I didn't want to eat it!  We were also taught how to make green tea and one of the participants got to try her hand at making it as well.  It was a great weekend and I'm glad I went.  Even though this tea ceremony wasn't as formal as I'm sure most are (we were forgiven for not sitting seiza the whole time), it was a great experience.

I have many Bucket Lists (countries I want to go/live in, places I want to go, etc.); I'd like to hear some things on your bucket list!  Have a great Golden Week holiday, hopefully you can check some things off your lists! See you in two weeks!

Food, Glorious Food!
Hello All.  It is Raashida again.  I hope you are enjoying your week.

It seems to be a common practice for foreign teachers living in Japan to pick up a new hobby during their stay. Some choose, dance or a traditional instrument like Taiko. Some have choosen Japanese calligraphy while others prefer something of a more athletic nature, like Kendo. I have been trying to decide what my Japanese hobby would be. Finally it dawned on me... FOOD!

I really enjoy Japanese food not only for the taste and variety but for the beauty of it. Even day-to-day meal preparation is an art-form here. Every meal feels special. I would like to prepare and present similar dishes to my family.

Japanese cuisine has also been proven to be one of the healthiest in the World. Everything that is consumed here seems to have a purpose. Daikon to aid digestion. Konyyaku to provide a low calorie fiber to your diet. I want to learn as much as possible about the benefits of the ingredients used in Japanese cooking. Why do you eat certain ingredients? When do you eat them? I am really curious.

I really enjoy cooking when I am in Johannesburg  or New York . Cooking is a creative outlet that can be shared with friends and family to create special moments. A few months ago, I considered taking a cooking class but never got around to finding one. So I've decided (hopefully with your help) to teach myself how to prepare Japanese cuisine.

So please feel free to share your recipes and advice about Japanese cooking. I have prepared a simple shopping list to get started. For my first recipe I will start by preparing ichiban dashi. I am starting with the basics but I hope to prepare traditional Osechi-ryori for my family when New Year comes.

I look forward to seeing you in class.

Take Care,
Raashida

Time flies when you're having fun
I can't believe tomorrow marks 4 weeks since I first started at ECM! In English, we have a saying: 'Time flies when you're having fun'...and that couldn't be more true in this case. I have really enjoyed my first month here meeting all the students and getting to know them. I've been keeping busy with my new hobbies, studying Japanese (I can now read Hiragana and Katakana!) teaching, trying to get around on the weekends to enjoy hanami and seeing friends I haven't seen in a few months, as well as planning my Golden Week holiday! I can't wait to hear what you all plan on doing with your time off. When in Canada, I often don't do much on holidays, just stay home and relax, maybe go camping or go visit my father on the farm. But when I'm abroad, I always try and take advantage of the time off to travel somewhere farther than I could go on a normal weekend. This usually results in leaving the morning of the first day of holidays and coming back the night of the last day, and not relaxing at all. I just want to be able to see as much as I can while I am here in Japan and Asia. When I first started travelling 9 years ago on my own, I was a planner, and always had an itinerary, mapping out what I would do each day and how much everything costs. As I've travelled more and more, I've come to realize that's a waste of time, as I never follow it. Often, I'll get somewhere, only to find things are different than what I expected them to be. I also really like staying in backpacker hostels, because I usually travel alone. I will probably always stay in hostels because it's such a great way to meet people from all walks of life. I often get advice from fellow travellers about places to visit and places not to visit. As well, I've met many really good friends from all over the world that can show me around their own country when I eventually visit it, as I know I will.  Hostels also often organize events for meeting people, such as pub crawls, walking tours, and movie nights. For my upcoming Golden week holiday, all I've booked so far is my hostel rooms and thats it (I like to at least know I have somewhere to sleep); I like to be spontaneous and have an adventure.  So hopefully that's what it turns out to be!  See you soon!
