Apple Picking
Hello there it is Raashida here.  As you have noticed the seasons have started to change.  In classes this week we have been discussing the changes from Summer to Fall.  Students describe activities, events and foods that are special to this time of year and I teach them about Autumn in NY.

We also have been playing games that have fall themes.  One game that we have been playing is called Mad Libs. Mad Libs is a fill-in-the-blank game that I played as a child.  You get a story that has certain words missing.  Players have to fill in the blank spaces with a random word that they chose (for example, a noun, adjective or verb) to finish the story.  After filling all the spaces we read the story out loud with the words that were chosen.  Sometimes the stories end up being really funny!  This is a great game to help students remember parts of speech which are the building blocks for grammar.  it is also good practice for reading and pronunciation because we read the stories out loud. This week we have been doing Mad Libs about apple picking, which is a very popular Fall activity in America.

Happy Birthday!
Hello everyone!

The weather has really cooled down in the last week, it's such a nice break from the heat and humidity of a Japanese summer.  Fall is here and I can't wait to go out and take pictures of all the beautiful autumn colours in the coming months!

Each month, every staff member here at ECM writes birthday cards and messages to students who will be celebrating their special day in the following month.  When we hand out the cards, the class sings the 'Happy Birthday' song, and we discuss birthday presents (what we've gotten and what we want), parties, cake, and many other fun things.

I hope those of you who had a birthday in September had a great, relaxing, and fun day.  Happy birthday September students!

Ziggy

ABCs and 123s
Hello everyone. It's Raashida here! I hope that everyone had a wonderful long weekend. I know many students had sports field days at school last weekend. This week I have heard many more fun stories about the fun and games at undoukai. The seasons are starting to change and it has also been nice hearing about the fun memories of Summer and what students are looking forward to this Autumn.

In classes this week in addition to doing book work we have been going back to basics with exercises like self-introductions and number recognition. We have also been reviewing the alphabet or "ABCs" using fun flash cards. In our younger classes we have been playing karuta with the letters of the alphabet. In older classes we have been practicing the sounds that the letters make (phonics) and matching letters to words. For example, "Frog"begins with the letter "F" . This is a good exercise for practising vocabulary review, spelling and phonics.
t
In high school and adult classes we have been talking about recent current events like the land dispute between Japan and China or the attacks on US Embassies in North Africa and the Middle East. We have also continued our discussions about the election processes of Japan and the United States.

This has been a short but fun-filled week. I hope that you have a great weekend those of you that will have undoukai this weekend gambarimasu! See you next week.

Prepositions
 Hello again!

I hope you all enjoyed your long weekend (if you got one!)  Many students lately have been reviewing or learning about prepositions (in, between, on, under, next to, behind, etc.).  These are difficult to remember in any language, I know I had trouble with them when I studied French as a child!  Usually I try to spend a little bit of extra time on remembering these important terms. Kids enjoy drawing, and so I try to use drawing as an activity whenever I can in the classroom.  For example, they can do a reading activity where they have to draw what the sentence says (ie. 'The cat is on the TV.').

Alternately, we can do listening activities individually or as a class.  For example, they draw a house on their piece of paper or on the whiteboard and then follow the instructions the teacher says.  For example, 'There's a dog behind the house.', 'There's a snake in the house.'  With the older kids, it can be more complicated, such as 'There's a rabbit on the TV in the living room.' or 'There's an umbrella in the bathtub in the kitchen.'  The sillier the better!

Undokai
Last weekend many schools in the area held their annual sports field day (±¿Æ°²ñ). In class this week, students have been describing the fun and games that take place at their field days.  We talk about having fun and students describe the different events.  I have also learned a lot about this fun school tradition.  Growing up in America and going to very small schools, I never participated in field days at school.  From the students descriptions it sounds like a lot of fun... and hard work.

In some of the adult classes we talked about 9/11 (September 11, 2001).  This week marks the 11th anniversary of the attacks on Washington DC, Pennsylvania and my hometown, New York City.  I shared my memories of that day and students shared their memories too. We discussed how the events of 9/11 have changed the World since 2011. Personally, I lost friends and loved ones in the attacks and I know many others who did too.  We also talked about how the anniversary is observed in the United States.

It is always interesting to share about our countries.  I love learning about Japan and I enjoy sharing about the USA.  I look forward to learning more about Japan in the coming weeks.

Take Care,
Raashida
