Another holiday is on its way...
 Hello again!

It's Iana.  How have you been? Apparently there's a flu going around right now, so please be careful and  take good care of your health.

As has been mentioned earlier, this week is both Parents Week and Speech Week here at ECM. It's nice to see that quite a few parents are finding the time to come and watch their children working hard and having fun in English class.  It has also been very interesting for me to hear all the students' speeches/introductions. Despite having taught them for a couple of months already, there are still things I'm only finding out now about them for the first time.

Looking into the future, next week is Valentine's Week here at ECM!  This means plenty of candy and games for all of you to enjoy once again.  Also, after this holiday there'll be a pretty long pause until the next one, sadly...  So please enjoy next week to the max!  Here at ECM we've been busy preparing materials for Valentine's Lessons throughout this past week, so please look forward to it.

~Iana.

P.S.:
The picture above was taken by me today and it depicts what I've been doing both today and yesterday.  In fact, this is also what I will spend most of my free time doing tomorrow too...

Valentine's Day Lessons are just around the corner!
 Hello again!

I hope you're all doing well!  Good job to those students who wrote tests last week, you did well and I'm proud of you :)

This week at ECM, as I'm sure you know, is the bi-annual Parents Observation week, so parents can come and see what we're learning about in class.  Last week, we practiced introduction with the elementary school students, so they could show off.  The Junior High and High School students were a little more challenged and had to write a one minute speech about any topic of their choice.  It was fun helping them and learning more about their interests.

As well, we're all busy preparing for Valentine's day lessons next week.  I can't believe it's already time for another holiday lesson; it feels like Christmas was just over!

So I hope you look forward to your lessons next week, and if you're good, we just might have a treat for you after class :)

Ziggy

Brief recap
 Hi there!

Iana back once again with a brief recap of what has been going on here at ECM this past week.  First off, as most of you should know from our previous blog entries, there's a speech week coming up. Hence, in all our children classes this week we've been practicing hard for that. With the younger students we practice introductions right in class while the older students have a bit more freedom. They can either write the speech directly in class and then have it checked by the teacher or they can write it at home as homework for the next lesson. However, either way, all our students are working hard to impress their parents next week.

Meanwhile, with many of our older students we've been discussing the upcoming karaoke trip that ECM has planned for its adult students.  The karaoke party will take place on Thursday, February 14th from 10:00 until 12:00.  We gave out fliers back in December of last year asking everyone to write down two English songs they'd like to sing at this event. Obviously all the songs we'll be singing have to be English as this is English conversation school after all.  So after choosing two songs from those suggested by our students we've finally begun to practice them during classes this week. In case you are interested, the two songs we chose are "We are the world" (originally sung by Michael Jackson) and "Smile" (originally sung by Charlie Chaplin). Personally, I like both of these songs because the message they carry in them is in both cases very beautiful.  Also, just to be fair, and because I promised this at a previous karaoke, I will try to sing a Japanese song at our event as well.  At least one, because there's a song I already know by heart. At most - three, if I have time to learn the two extra ones.

Overall, as usual, everyone has been working hard again this week at ECM.  Both students and teachers. In addition to the usual everyday tasks I've finally begun preparing materials for the Valentine's Day  lessons we'll be having for one week starting February 4th.  Seems like only yesteday I posted pictures here on this blog of my preparations for Christmas Week... And now it's already just over a week until yet another holiday. Time sure does fly!

~Iana.

P.S.: As Valentine's Day lessons are pretty much around the  corner, I thought I'd mention, just as a friendly reminder, that we still have the Christmas  Week picture albums at both of our ECM offices for you to order the pictures you want. I took the above picture of the Shunan Xmas Photos Album today while teaching there.

Speech Week
 Hello again!

I hope you all enjoyed your weekend!  Good luck to those students having tests this week!  Ganbatte!

As I mentioned last week, next week will be parents week, as well as speech week, so we have started to practice with the classes.

The young students will be stating simple things like their name, age, and what colour they like.  The older elementary students will be doing full introductions, as well as talking about their daily routines.  The Junior High and High School students have a little more freedom, and can basically talk about anything they like.   There speeches are a little more challenging as they have to write and practice them, so we have been taking some extra time in class for that this week.  Some of the grade 9 students have been talking about starting High School in April.  It's fun to see how excited they are and why they chose the high school they did.  It reminds me of all the different feelings I felt going to high school for the first time!  I hope you all study hard and do well on your exams so your dreams can come true :)

See you next week!

Ziggy

'Favorites poll' results & more
 Hi there!

Iana here once again bringing you another portion of updates about ECM's day-to-day life.  As has been mentioned in previous blog entries by our staff, a lot of the students are close to finishing their current books and moving on to new ones. Hence, there's quite a few tests that are happening already or will be happening in the near future.  This is why in a lot of our classes we continue to review the material we have learned so far. There are special worksheets for helping students review grammar. In addition to that we talk a lot and play various games to help them remember the vocabulary. If you are among those who will have tests soon, I wish you the best of luck!  Please do your best!

Among other things we've been doing in most classes recently is the discussion of favorite holidays and seasons. This is because there were quite a few holidays happening in the last few months, as well as more holidays, such as Valentine's Day, will come soon. So in all of my classes except the very young ones I've been asking students what their favorite holiday is. Among the younger students Christmas and Oshogatsu  seem to be the most popular choices. As to why they choose them, mostly it's because they enjoy the presents , Christmas cake and the New Year 'otoshidama' money.  Among adult students holidays such as Golden Week and Obon, as well Oshogatsu were in the lead. The main reason for this was the fact that all three of these holidays have a pretty long vacation that comes with them.  When asked about a favorite season quite a few of the younger students picked the season when their birthday  is, giving that as a reason  for their choice as well. Among the adult students fall and spring seemed to be the most popular with the main reason being the nice not-too-hot and not-too-cold weather.

As for myself, my favorite holiday is the New Year because it allows me to spend quality time with my family and friends.  Since I have been living abroad and far away from home for the past few years, such an opportunity has become even more precious.  Also, I absolutely love the traditional New Year dishes of my home country.  As far as seasons go, like a lot of our students I like spring the best. One of the reasons for this is the fact that my own birthday, as well as the birthdays of both of my parents, my brother and one of my best friends are all in spring. However, the number one thing I love about spring is the feeling of all of nature awakening.  Trees get new green leaves, flowers bloom  and birds sing.  After a long, dark and cold winter which can be a pretty depressing time, spring feels really refreshing!  This is why even though it's still January, I'm already secretly counting the days until spring.

~Iana.

P.S.:  I posted the picture above in continuation of the topic of spring and to brighten up today's cold, windy  and rainy day. I took it during my short trip to Fukuoka last year in April. I was there for just 5-6 days to attend a concert, but luckily it was the exact time sakura was blooming.
