Yamaguchi

Hello everyone!

We have a new school in Yamaguchi now! Isn't that cool? It's a very cozy place. It will be wonderful to teach classes there! I look forward to seeing what kind of students we will have.
I hope you are all doing well. Luckily, the weather has been getting warmer. I can't wait for spring to be here! Do you like spring? What's your favorite season?

24th February

Hi Everyone

I hope you are all keeping well. On this day in 2018, Japanese speed skater Nana Takagi won her 2nd gold medal of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in the women's mass start event; she was also a member of Japan's successful pursuit team. I am looking forward to seeing Japan winning many gold medals in this year's summer olympics.

Kind regards

John

Chocolate

Hello everyone!

What kind of chocolate do you like? Personally, my favorite is white chocolate. I don't like bitter chocolate. There are actually many kinds of chocolate; bitter, sweet, white, milk, and even spicy! Some people like to put red chili flakes in it. Isn't that strange?

Valentine's

Hello everyone!

Valentine's day is coming. It's a holiday about love..... but what is love, anyway?! Actually, there are several different types of love. According to the ancient Greeks, there are actually eight, to be exact! But, today, I will tell you about three of them.
First, is Storge. This is love between family members, such as a parent and their child. Some people who are not related by blood may feel this as well. It is not romantic, of course, but it is a very strong bond!
Second, is Eros. This is a romantic love. It is passionate and often physical. It is an expression of passion and desire. The Greeks were actually afraid of this kind of love due to it's intensity and because it tends to burn out quickly.
Thirdly, is Philia. This love is affectionate, often found between friends. It isn't romantic at all! Because there is no physical aspect to it, some Greeks viewed this love as more valuable than Eros.
Many people associate the word 'love' with romance, but this isn't true at all. There are many different kinds of love. It's quite a lot to think about!

National Foundation Day

Hi Everyone!

National Foundation Day is celebrated tomorrow on February 11th to mark the foundation of Japan and the accession of Emperor Jimmu.

National Foundation Day marks the accession of Jimmu, the first Emperor of Japan to the throne in 660BCE. It was established by the ÌÀ¼£»þÂå in 1872 under the name Kigensetsu (Empire Day) and was likely intended to legitimize the rule of the Imperial family following the breakup of the ÆÁÀî¾·³.

The first Empire Day was officially observed on °ì·î 29th 1872 because, according to legend, Emperor Jimmu assumed the Throne “on the first day of the first month.” The first day of the first ·î on the Chinese lunar calendar corresponds with January 29th on the modern Gregorian calendar.

In 1872 most of Japan’s population still used the Chinese lunar ¥«¥ì¥ó¥À¡¼ despite the official switch to the Gregorian calendar. The result was that Empire Day fell on what most considered to be ¤ªÀµ·î and a majority of people observed New Year’s Day instead of Empire Day. In response to this, the Meiji Government moved Empire Day to the 11th of February claiming that it was in fact the day of Jimmu’s accession.

Before World War II, this holiday was marked by large parades, ²Ö²Ð and ¤ªº×¤ê intended to focus national attention on the emperor, and was considered one of the 4 most major ½ËÆü in Japan.

Empire Day and its original practices were abolished after the war, and, ironically, the first draft of the post-War constitution was approved by General MacArthur on February 11th 1946.

February 11th was reestablished as ·ú¹ñµÇ°Æü in 1966 and is marked by the raising of Japanese ¹ñ´ú and reflecting upon the meaning of Japanese »Ô̱¸¢

It's worth learning more about it, so try and have a look in your spare time. I hope your holiday is an enjoyable one!

Regards

John

Hobbies

Hello everyone!

These days, it seems like everyone is busy. Between school, and work, and keeping up with daily life-- having a hobby seems a bit hard to do these days. But, I think having a hobby is important. What do you like to do? I like to study art and play computer games. Unfortunately, these hobbies can sometimes be a bit expensive...
No matter what your hobby is, I hope you have fun.
